January always feels to me like an opportunity for a new beginning. Whatever failures I'm holding within me, I can let these go and seize a positive, hopeful, optimistic sense of my ability to change and improve myself. It's the one time of year when it feels easier to be my own source of inspiration.
Which is why resolutions don't work. After all, what's inspiring about a resolution? Even the word itself sounds harsh and bleak. It's too practical, too target-driven, too lacking in a reason why.
And it's the why that inspires us--the vision of who we want to be, the feeling of profound joy at the thought of transforming ourselves into something new.
So, this New Year, don't make resolutions. Create a vision. It's this vision that will motivate you over the long-haul, help you overcome the moments of doubt, pull you out of the slumps when it feels so much easier just to give in.
One of the tools that I use with clients (and myself) is vision mind-mapping. In the centre of a piece of paper goes the goal. It could be something as simple as 'feel great'. Then, spiraling out from this centre is anything and everything relating to what this means--the benefits it will bring, what is needed to achieve it, what it will feel like to have it. Ask yourself questions, like "why do I want this?", "what do I need to do?", "what positive impacts will it have to myself and others?". It's incredible what your brain will come up with when it's given a free-flowing space to run rampant with thoughts and ideas.
And just for you, I have a sample blank mind map to get you started. You might find it useful, or you might prefer to dig in with a blank piece of paper. Use coloured pens or pencils if the idea grabs you. (Creativity and inspiration are intricately linked within our brains.) When you're done, put the mind map someplace where you'll see it or you'll have ready access to it in your low moments. Let the sense of pure joy and purpose that it contains guide you through the process of achieving your goal.
